This volume is not quite what it sounds similar from the description. Yes, Penelope does struggle with trying to exist "perfect," and with non beingness sure when she'll be good Penelope or aroused Penelope. Simply that's more of a background characteristic than an actual function of the plot. The plot is what you'd expect from the title--Penelope tries to get a best friend.

Strengths:
Penelope is a picayune on the broken-hearted side, but she has techniques she uses to assist herself calm downwardly (view spoiler)[, every bit does Bob, whos

This book is not quite what it sounds like from the clarification. Yes, Penelope does struggle with trying to be "perfect," and with non beingness certain when she'll be expert Penelope or angry Penelope. But that'southward more than of a groundwork characteristic than an actual part of the plot. The plot is what y'all'd await from the title--Penelope tries to become a all-time friend.

Strengths:
Penelope is a little on the anxious side, but she has techniques she uses to aid herself calm down (view spoiler)[, as does Bob, whose calming techniques are completely different from Penelope'south (hide spoiler)]. That's an important skill, and a lot of kids could benefit from it existence highlighted that way.

Penelope doesn't simply endeavor to be perfect for the sake of perfection. She'due south clearly a good person who tries to do the right thing. For kids reading this with their parents, this could be a smashing jumping off indicate to talk over the difference between being good in a empathetic sense and being good in a perfectionist sense.

Individuality is historic--the idea that everyone is different and should be free to be who they are is one of the central lessons, and what'southward more than, it's done organically within the story, rather than being tacked on as a preachy message for the reader (a common problem with child's books).

The issue of caring more about who you imagine a person to be than who they actually are is addressed ((view spoiler)[Penelope wants a best friend so bad that she forgets that the new girl is an bodily person who may be nothing like the best friend she'due south imagined (hide spoiler)]), which is another super of import lesson, and one you don't see quite as often at this level.

The fact that Penelope (view spoiler)[already had a potential best friend without realizing it (hide spoiler)] is a prissy touch, and could aid kids realize they could be overlooking important details when worrying most their issues .

Weaknesses:
Despite addressing some important issues in a decent way, this book feels pretty insubstantial. I just finished it a couple days ago, and I barely remember it. I can't say whether the aforementioned would be true for a child, but I tin say that I read another children'south book the day before (Cilla Lee-Jenkins: Future Author Extraordinaire) and I recall virtually everything about it. That book had a strong, distinct voice and personality; this one, not so much. Penelope didn't really come live for me. This may not exist the case for a child (i.east. the bodily target audition), but I'd say this book is more than suited to the kind of kid who devours books, rather than the kind who only reads a select few.

The adults are kind of insignificant. They're there, and they do stuff, but they remind me of Nanny from Muppet Babies--I feel like I never saw their face, so to speak, like they were just a vague presence in the children'south lives.

I'yard not sure I've ever plant a satisfying portrayal of bullying, or responding to bullies, in fiction, and this is no exception. Given the historic period group, information technology'southward definitely bullying lite, merely the insults felt a little unrealistic (though far from the worst I've read), and the response also simple. But it'southward a pretty standard portrayal (you know, (view spoiler)["oh yep, well I'll only exist myself anyway" and and so everyone joins in and the bully is stumped (hibernate spoiler)]), and then it inappreciably warrants mentioning.

In curt, it's...okay. For a kid who reads a lot, information technology'due south a good plenty book for them to sprint through before moving on to the next, and in that location are some positive lessons for them to absorb while doing and so, only I don't think there's annihilation hither to strike the interest of reluctant readers.

Cute start to the Penelope Perfect series, which has been published previously outside of the US. Penelope is an interesting grapheme; a perfectionist side by side to characters like Dory Fantasmagory and Judy Moody.
